The Wilkes Women’s Lacrosse team has a new addition to their team this upcoming season: a new head coach. Maegan Laymon is the fifth head coach for the women’s lacrosse team in the history of Wilkes University.
Laymon was an athlete during her years in college at Green Mountain College. She played lacrosse and soccer. The team is thrilled to have an experienced coach and is ready to dive back into the game.
Laymon is enthusiastic to be the head coach of the women’s lacrosse team.
“The opportunity to lead this program became available and I went after it,” Laymon said. “Wilkes has all of the resources to be successful academically and athletically. I wanted to be the person that could take this program to the next level, and I believe we will get there.”
Laymon began coaching women’s lacrosse in 2017 and was an assistant coach at Lourdes University and SUNY Polytechnic Institute. She also was an assistant coach to Division II Alderson Broaddus University.
In the most recent seasons, Laymon was head coach for Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tenn. During her time at Lausanne, she led the program to two winning seasons and set a second best goal scoring record during the 2022 season.
Laymon is looking to rebuild the Wilkes team this season and is pumped to see how far she can take this team.
“I am most excited about learning the ins and outs of this program. We are in a rebuilding phase, the team is very excited about this new chapter. I am looking forward to seeing the next level these ladies can take the program to.”
Senior Alexis Guttilla is the captain of the women’s lacrosse team. She is pleased to welcome Coach Laymon.
“I really appreciate the efforts and sense of urgency from our new athletic director and hiring staff,” Guttilla said. “Coach Laymon has great things in store for us and will turn our team around. I’m really looking forward to this offseason and getting to work with the team as we start to put the pieces together.”
Gutilla is excited for what’s in store for this team and sees this as a fresh start.
“With the team being made up of mostly newcomers, the opportunities are endless.”
Junior Mara Adams is looking forward to the new season and a brand new coach.
“Our program has gone through a lot of changes within the last five years,” Adams said. “Although I haven’t been there for all these changes, I have felt the aftermath of the changes. Coach Laymon has already reached out to all of us individually and is starting to form connections with us as a team.”
Laymon plans to be authentic with the team and always put the players first.
“I plan to be myself. Stay true to my values and really get to know all of the young ladies. Coming into a program that has not had consistency can be difficult, but I think it is a great opportunity to start something completely new with the program.”
Adams is ready for this new chapter with the team.
“I am excited to see what she does with this team after we lost a majority of our team last year due to graduation but we have an amazing group of freshmen stepping up to the plate.”
