According to a report by Marywood University’s The Wood Word, Marywood’s Tara Macciocco will take the reigns at Wilkes University as head coach of women’s basketball.

The Wood Word reported they obtained a memo written by the Marywood Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Mary Jo Gunning. The memo was obtained through a Marywood Athletics staff member.

Gunning said in that memo that Macciocco accepted the head women’s basketball coaching job at Wilkes University, according to The Wood Word.

“Certainly, her presence will be missed and she has impacted our departments and student-athletes in many positive ways,” Gunning wrote, according to The Wood Word. “I am confident you will join me in wishing her only the best in all future endeavors.”

A Marywood Athletics administrator did confirm to The Beacon that Macciocco’s last day of employment at Marywood is set for Apr. 25.

The Wood Word’s report said Macciocco’s biography was taken down, but later said Marywood Athletics informed them it was a mistake. The biography has been since placed back on the website.

However, Wilkes Athletics could confirm to The Beacon that an offer to a “candidate” was made, but no hiring would be official until a set of background checks and various clearances are obtained.

Macciocco is no stranger to Wilkes. She spent three seasons at Wilkes as an assistant coach. Macciocco acted as recruiting coordinator for the program and worked primarily with the development of the guards.

According to the Marywood Athletics website, Macciocco’s current roles include: assistant director of athletics, senior woman administrator, head women’s basketball coach and assistant women’s golf coach.

In her 14 seasons as head coach, Macciocco led the Pacers to seven Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournaments. She has accumulated a record of 206-161 overall and 141-83 in conference play.

She also earned back-to-back Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and 2017 while leading the Pacers to 10 straight CSAC postseason appearances.

Macciocco was named the CSAC Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year in 2015-16 and 2016-17. The Macciocco-led Pacers tied a program record with 19 wins during the 2015-16 campaign. She took Marywood to its first-ever No. 1 seed in the CSAC playoffs with a 15-1 record. Marywood won the first ECAC playoff game in program history in its semifinal run.

Macciocco finished her playing career at Division II Lock Haven University during the 1998-1999 season where she was named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference all conference team while setting a school record for free throw percentage and was also ranked second in the nation in that same category during the 1998-1999 season.
