Lady Colonels see their perfect season come to an end at the hands of FDU Devils.
The Wilkes University women’s lacrosse team was handed its first defeat of the season on Wednesday, April 9, courtesy of the FDU-Florham Devils.
With the loss, Wilkes’ record 9-0 start is snapped and the Lady Colonels fall to 9-1 overall, 2-1 in the Freedom Conference. FDU-Florham improves to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in Freedom play.
Momentum swung back and forth throughout the matchup. The Devils took control early, scoring three quick, unassisted goals in the first five minutes of the game. Wilkes fought back, scoring the next two goals, but FDU pulled away again just as quickly with a pair of goals 30 seconds later, pushing the lead to 5-2.
“We just were not playing like the undefeated team that we were,” Colonels head coach Kammie Towey said. She added that the team was constantly “out of formation” and “blowing coverages.”
Wilkes started to show its undefeated form in the second half. The Lady Colonels scored five straight goals within the first 10 minutes, taking their first lead of the game at 10-9. FDU, in an all-too-familiar fashion, then went on a four-goal run, taking back the lead 13-10. It would hang on to that lead for the remainder of the game.
“The Colonels are a tough team, probably the toughest we’ve played,” FDU head coach Adrienne Carr said. “I think that level of competition just brought out the best in our team. They really did everything right today.”
Wilkes outshot FDU-Florham 32-23 for the game and committed one less turnover (17 to 18). Wilkes also dominated the draw controls with 21 wins compared to FDU’s 10.
The Lady Colonels return to action on Monday, April 14, at the College at Old Westbury.
