The Wilkes University men’s baseball team picked up two wins this past weekend against freedom conference foe Delaware Valley. The Colonels earned a 10-2 victory in game one and came out victorious in the second game, with a 6-4 win respectively.
The Colonels knocked in five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning then blasted in five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory. Wilkes junior Stephen Ruch, went 5-8 on the day, as well as picking up five RBI’s. Sophomore Patrick Condo earned the complete game with an all around solid performance on the mound. Condo allowed just two runs off six hits while fanning eight total throughout the contest.
The second game got a bit scary for the Colonels as they faced themselves down 2-1 in the third, but the colonels roared back using a five run fourth inning to take command of the lead. Junior second basemen Bobby Schappell slapped a two run single which was then followed by another two run single from who else but Stephen Ruch.
The Aggies of Delaware Valley made it interesting adding two runs in the sixth, but freshman Matt Kaster threw a scoreless seven to secure the second victory of the day for the colonels. Kaster also earned is second save of the season.
Head coach Matt Hollod had this to say, “We had a good weekend where we played two pretty complete games. We had clutch hitting, our defense was very good, and our pitching competed enough to keep us in the games.”
With the two wins the Colonels move their record to 6-6 while moving to 3-2 in the freedom conference.
