Despite a strong showing early, the sharp shooting of DeSales leads them to victory over the Lady Colonels.
The Wilkes University Lady Colonels women’s basketball team was defeated by DeSales University 71-53 this past Tuesday.
The Lady Colonels held a 33-32 lead with about 18 minutes remaining in the game before being outscored 39-20 the remainder of the game.
The hot shooting of Alexiah Grant from DeSales kept them on top as she hit four 3 point field goals shooting 66% from behind the arch with 32 points for the game.
The Lady Colonels hung in tough with DeSales, who is one of the top teams in the league. However, they were unable to hold down DeSales even with the solid defensive play of junior guard Kate Thomas.
“We were playing one of our best games of the season defensively,” said the junior. “When they started hitting their shots there was almost nothing that we could do. However, our team gave it all we had to try and stop them.”
1000 point scorer, junior guard Elena Stambone, had a solid performance by leading the Lady Colonels in scoring with 19 points.
“We did all we could to stop them, but it they just shot the ball too well,” said the Lady Colonel standout. “We just need to regroup and beat King’s on Saturday to finish the season strong.”
Chelsea Brown added 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks and Kayla Brahm had 4 assists for the Lady Colonels.
The Wilkes women’s basketball team is back in action Saturday at 1 pm against cross-town rival King’s College.
