The Wilkes men’s soccer team has put themselves in position for a heck of a run in the Freedom Conference this season.

The Colonels are off to a 7-4 record in nonconference play, outscoring their opponents by a score of 27-14. Coming off a 2-1 loss to nationally ranked No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology, the Colonels are proving they can play with anybody. Much of the Colonels success can be attributed to the play of senior defenseman Geoffrey Arentz.

“This season has started as well as we could’ve hoped,” said the senior. “We have a few losses to a few good teams and some good wins against some good teams. Our team has great character. We played Stevens very well, they were a very skilled team overall, but our team effort kept us in the game.”

Arentz is seemingly always on the field for the Colonels. He has helped their defense hold its opponents down all season long so far.

“So far I’ve had four assists and started every game,” the defenseman said. “I feel I help our team with a strong presence in the air by winning head balls.”

However, Arentz isn’t satisfied with his game as a whole and is constantly working hard to get better at his one on one game defending attackers. This is the type of effort the Colonels will need going forward to make a statement in conference play.

“A personal and team goal for all of us is to make it into the conference playoffs which will require us to have a strong run in the conference play,” Arentz said.

If Arentz and the Colonels want to get off to hot start in conference, it all starts in the coming weeks.

The conference opener was Oct. 5 at home against Eastern University. The next game will be at home against Farleigh Dickinson College at 1 p.m. Oct. 12.
