Most of us are staying inside cuddling up in our blankets to try to sty out of the cold..not the Wilkes’ Mens Baseball Team.
As opening day approaches, March 10, 2013, Matt Hollod has his boys working hard. Matt Hollod joins the Wilkes University baseball staff for his first season as head coach in 2013. He served as associate head baseball coach at Freedom Conference rival DeSales University for two years. Also helping our baseball team to success is a graduate assistant Steve Galella.
Even though their record last year wasn’t “out of the ballpark” the returning players are ready to win and turn start their season right. Last years stats were 13-26 (W-L) but the main goals for this team isn’t to just win.
Head Coach Matt Hollod wants his players to demonstrate three main mindsets and they all have to do with a great word, respect. He just wants them to learn to respect the game, respect their teammates, and most importantly respect their opponents.
“A lot of things go into this, and once you achieve this, and are playing the game the right way, then you can really take off as a program,” said by Hollod.
Respect is a very important mindset to have and understand so once they all understand it they will achieve it all. With seven new freshman on the team they are probably feeling the most excited about the upcoming season. The top returners for the team are Carmen LoPresto SS, Steve Ruch 1B/3B, Dan Pisanchyn DH/1B. The team isn’t going to experience a normal spring break.
They are traveling to a tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for 5 days. What a way to start off their season. Wilkes ended last in the Freedom conference with four wins and seventeen losses. Misericordia is obviously the biggest threat to their chances to win over the conference. Miseicordia had a whopping eighteen wins and only three losses. Enough dwelling on the past season and focus on the new season coming up.
It’s a brand new season with a brand new team and most importantly a brand new coach. I’m sure all the boys are so excited to get out on the diamond and show what they have been working for all year long. Baseball is a year long sport you have fall ball, then spring training, and then of course the actual season and throughout all of that you have lifting. Since we have a brand new team this is going to be very exciting to watch in the spring.
