The Wilkes wrestling team came home with a second place finish in the Monarch Invitational bringing home two individual titles, Guesseppe Rea winning the 125-pound class and Myzar Mendoza winning the 133-pound class.
The Colonels finished the day with 137 points finishing behind SUNY Cortland who posted 147 points. Overall, the Colonels had 13 wrestlers place in the top 6 or better in their weight class.
The teams that finished in the top 5 were SUNY Cortland with 147 points, Wilkes with 137 points, York PA finished third with 134.5 points, fourth was Oneonta State with 77.5 points, and rounding out the top 5 was Roger Williams with 67.5 points.
At the 125-pound weight class Wilkes’s Guesseppe Rea took home a title. During his championship run he defeated Gettysburg’s Matt Laux in the first defeating him by a decision 8-1. In the quarterfinals Rea wrestled RIT’s Mike Nguyen and won by a decision of 5-2. In the semifinals Rea took on York’s Evan Zuzulock and won by a decision of 7-5, and in the finals Rea wrestled York’s Kenny Arentz and won by a decision of 9-2.
At 133-pound weight class Wilkes’s Myzar Mendoza won the title. During his title run he wrestled SUNY Cortland’s Dave Occhipinti and won by technical fall score of 17-2. In the quarterfinals Mendoza took on York’s William Boyd and won by a decision score of 6-3, in the semifinals he wrestled SUNY Cortland’s Max Miller and won by a decision of 2-0. In Mendoza’s championship final he wrestled SUNY Cortland’s Alec Dierna and won by a major decision of 9-0.
Wilkes had two wrestlers at the 141-pound weight class, Jeff Peterson and Brad Royle. Jeff Peterson fell to an injury and had to leave the tournament. Brad Royle came home with a fourth place.
Wilkes had three wrestlers at the 149-pound weight class, John Lynch, Kristopher Krawchuk, and Sean Lombardi. John Lynch did not place, Kristopher Krawchuk finished with a fourth place, and Sean Lombardi finished with sixth place.
At the 157-pound weight class Wilkes’s Tyler Lauchhaire and Stephen Turner and Philip Racciato did not place.
167, Nathan White finished fifth and Nick Lynch and Ryan Barry did not place.
174, Marlon Duque, Chase Martino, Aaron Transue, and Tyler Pickard did not place. Dustin Stough brought home a second place finish.
184, Eric Bach finished fourth and Levi Veppert finished sixth and Tyler Suruskie did not place.
197, Matthew Transue finished fourth and Dave Oberrender finished fifth.
285, William Fletcher had a strong second place finish.
The Colonels will take the mat again next Saturday at the John Reese Duals.
