After Saturday’s rain moved the double header to Sunday, the Manhattanville Valiants defeated the Wilkes Colonels 6-5 in game one and 10-6 in game two at Artillery Park.
Manhattanville opened up with an early 2-0 lead in game one after a solo home run in the third inning. With Wilkes trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning, freshman Dan Pisanchyn singled in a run making it 3-2 Manhattanville.
In the seventh inning, the Valiants increased their lead to 6-2 after scoring three more runs. The Colonels late comeback was not enough as they fell short 6-5.
In game two, Manhattanville jumped to another early lead in the second inning, going up 6-3. In the third, freshman Stephen Ruch belted a two run homer, cutting the deficit to 8-5. “Once I made contact with the ball, I knew it was gone,” said Ruch. “We really needed that to try and make a late comeback.”
With the Valiants up 10-6 in the fifth, the weather again stepped in, forcing the umpires to end the game early. Although the game was called early, the results still count towards both teams records.
Wilkes slips to 9-14 overall and 2-7 in Freedom games and returns to play Tuesday with a non-league road contest at Lebanon Valley College at 3:30 p.m.
