Student Government held its weekly meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 15, consisting of club recognitions and fund requests.
The first issue to be brought back to the stand was club recognition week 2 of 2 for the Gold Bar Club. The Gold Bar Club’s mission is to conduct community service and professional development for the Wilkes campus and community. This club is utilized by the ROTC program on campus, though it is open for all students to join. This club would not only help the students and greater community of Wilkes-Barre, but would also provide funding for ROTC. Student Government approved the motion to recognize the Gold Bar Club.
Next was the Step Team Club, a dance club that consists of an African-American style of dancing. Stepping is a type of dance that utilizes the whole body as an instrument, such as claps, stomps and the use of their voice. This new club would allow the campus to be exposed to a new culture and new styles of dance. The Student Government approved the motion to recognize the Step Team Club.
The Black Student Union then gave its first presentation. The Black Student Union would allow a space for students of color to promote their cultures and history as well as celebrate and educate the Wilkes community. This club is open to everyone and encourages people to join. The Black Student Union will be back next week and their club recognition will be voted on.
The FBLA, or Future Business Leaders of America, presented a fund request. The FBLA is a branch or organization of nationwide professional organizations that hold a conference each year. The FBLA members on campus are asking Student Government for $1,300 in total to help cover the price of registration to attend. They are hoping to send 13 members to this year’s conference. FBLA will be back next week and their funding request will be voted on.
Capital Projects then presented a fund request for the Marts Fitness Center. The Capital Projects Committee is hoping to get three more treadmills for the gym. Currently, several treadmills in the fitness center are outdated or broken. The Capital Project Committee is asking for $20,777 for three new motorless treadmills with custom Wilkes labeling. This would help both Marts, athletes and the greater community on the Wilkes campus that use the Marts Fitness Center. The Capital Project Committee will be back next week for their fund request to be voted on.
The Spring Fling fund request was revisited for week 2 of 2. Spring Fling will be held on March 24 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.. This year’s theme is “Enchanted Forest” and will be held at the Mary Stegmaier Mansion. The whole Mansion will be decorated in green and have food as well as a DJ. The fund request was for $13,705 and the motion for the fund request was approved by the Student Government.
The Student Government will meet next week on Feb. 22.
