The second annual Sausage Sizzle, hosted by the university’s President’s office, was held Sept. 21 outside of the Weckesser Hall parking lot. President Greg Cant and Angela Cant, the president’s wife, served a traditional Australian lunch including sausage on toast, potato salad and a variety of drinks.
A sausage sizzle is a grilled barbecued food item that is at community events in Australia. The sausage is served on a piece of sliced bread with grilled onions and various condiments. Condiments include ketchup, barbecue sauce and mustard.
This event was free to all Wilkes students, staff and faculty. Bridget Giunta, executive assistant to the President; Phil Erickson, graduate assistant; and the Cants served the guests.
Aramark catered the event, and Luscio Agustini, employee of Aramark, grilled the sausages and provided vegetarian options.
Last May was the last time this event was held and bringing it back was a hit.
“I really enjoyed that they did this,” said junior business administration major Eza Chaudry. “It is so crazy that you can come out in the middle of the day and they have food for you. I usually get hungry around this time, so it was very accurate timing.”
Students stood in line or partook in the yard games provided by Student Development and Programming Board.
“I am really glad that the weather held out for this,” President Cant said. Cant explained two days prior that he was nervous that the event would have to undergo changes due to the weather. However, the odds were in his favor.
Chaudry was joined with the rest of the university in indulging in Australian cuisine. Students, staff and faculty met at tables and caught up with each other despite the busy work week.
“You do not see Australian culture much and with the president of the university sharing it with us is so cool,” said political science major Morgan Steiner.
The university’s motto is “unity amidst diversity,” and this event allowed students to take a glimpse into Cant’s culture.
Wilkes will next host Homecoming beginning Sept. 29 with Student Government’s pep rally to get the weekend started. For more information go to wilkes.edu or follow Student Government on Instagram (@wilkessg).
