The Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra will be performing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Church of Christ Uniting in Kingston.

“It is a concert that features music for the holiday season to entertain the audience,” Conductor Philip G. Simon said.

Some songs that can be heard are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Sleigh Ride,” “Christmas Concerto: Concerto Grosso” composed by Arcangelo Corelli, and “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson.

The performance is being put on as “an experience for the class as an ensemble,” Simon added. “All Wilkes University ensembles put on a performance at the end of the semester, and we are no different.”

Carl Ruck, choir director and organist of the Church of Christ Uniting, will also be joining the performance by accompanying the orchestra on the piano and organ for various selections of the program, one in particular being “A Christmas Festival.”

“The performance aims to bring holiday cheer and get people in spirit for the holiday season,” Martina Barna, a member of the Chamber Orchestra, said. “The concert also shows how the ensemble is taking a different route from what they usually present as far as musical repertoire goes.”

The ensemble consists of mostly Wilkes students with a few adult members who volunteer their time and talents. The orchestra has been preparing the pieces since the beginning of the semester.

“Like every performance, it was rough at the beginning when we first received the music but now we are using our remaining time fine-tuning the little technicalities,” Barna said.

The concert is open to the public and is free of admission. After the performance, the hosts of the church will be providing homemade deserts and beverages in a small reception.

The Church of Christ Uniting is at 190 S. Sprague Ave., Kingston, just off Wyoming Avenue.
